Ouroboros

I keep meaning to get back into a regular schedule with this blog, but it just ain't happenin'. Time is too short; others do a better job of covering the issues in a timely fashion anyway.

Also, for now at least, I feel like I need to focus what spare energy I have on something a bit more aligned with my intellectual and career interests. To that end, I've started Ouroboros, a weblog devoted to research in the biology of aging — which is, for those of you who weren't aware, what I do for a living. If you're interested in the field, come on over and check it out.

I'll leave Marching Orders up for the foreseeable future; there still seems to be a steady trickle of archive readers. Who knows, maybe if the California governor's race heats up and gets closer, I'll be back.

For now, take care and be well, and thanks for reading.

Arnold gets hit from the right on immigration

I wonder whether he ever feels uncomfortable that he shares a party affiliation with these folks.

Schwarzenegger Bus Tour Hits Bump
(LA Times) A campaign appearance by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today quickly turned into a bitter complaint session, with conservative voters visibly angry at him over illegal immigration and the parole of convicted murderers.

The San Diego County event, at a community park, was tightly controlled by Schwarzenegger campaign aides. But some members of the invited audience turned on the governor, while others alternately booed and cheered some tense exchanges.

An El Cajon woman, who said she had been a Republican since the mid-1960s, chastised the governor for failing to secure the California-Mexico border and stopping illegal immigrants who come here and "get everything free."

"I voted for you, and right now I don't see much difference between you and Phil Angelides," said the woman, Sally Plata, 66, referring to Schwarzenegger's Democratic opponent for governor. "I don't see that you are standing up for the citizens of California."

In the absence of a serious conservative challenger on the ballot, this is a non-issue. A small minority of conservatives might stay home or vote for a dark horse, but I can't see this changing the landscape in November by more than a hair. What happened to the massive people-powered movement of roughly this time last year? You couldn't open a news site without hearing about a well-coordinated, anti-Arnold protest. Did this movement lose its motivation, its organizers, or just its teeth?

Schwarzenegger's up by 8

I spoke too soon in the last entry when I mentioned that the California gubernatorial race appeared to be tightening up.

A recently released Field poll shows Schwarzenegger up by 8.
The latest statewide Field Poll updates voter preferences in the November gubernatorial election. Among the survey's main findings are these:
  • Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger continues to lead Democratic State Treasurer Phil Angelides in voter preferences. The survey shows Schwarzenegger to be the choice of 45% of likely voters. Angelides receives 37% support, 3% favor other candidates and 15% are undecided.
  • Republicans are rallying strongly behind Schwarzenegger, with 85% supporting the Governor. On the other hand, Angelides has not yet achieved the high level of support that successful Democratic candidates typically receive among their party's rank-and-file, with less than two in three (63%) currently backing his candidacy.
  • Most voters are basing their voting preferences on how they regard Schwarzenegger. About two thirds of Schwarzenegger's voters (65%) say their vote is more an endorsement of the Governor than a vote against Angelides. On the other hand, two-thirds of Angelides voters (65%) say their preference is more a vote against the Governor than an endorsement of Angelides. Link

Yuck. Well, at least if you believe in polls. :-)

The grinning skull of Gray Davis looks on with interest

The California Independent System Operator, CalISO, has a sweet utility on their website that allows one to compare forecasts of available electricity to forecasts of demand. You can check it out here.

What strikes me about the graph today is that demand seems to be very close to outstripping supply, which is the reason why several MSM sources are starting to soften up Californians for the possibility of rolling blackouts — one of the main albatrosses hanging around Gray Davis' neck before his recall.

Yeah baby. That's demand coming up to about 98% of supply at the peak. What happens if one of those sudden 8% drops (like the one at 8 AM) happens in the middle of the afternoon? I realize that in an efficient market one wants there to be very little unused excess capacity, and I also realize that spikes of the sort at 8 AM this morning are sometimes the result of faulty data getting resolved within the computer tracking system -- I'm just saying, what if?

Not sure whether I've got a clear point just yet, but if I did it would be something like this: Just as the gubernatorial race between Schwarzenegger and Angelides is tightening up, wouldn't it be something if rolling blackouts started pushing down Arnold's popularity? Poetic justice, even.

That will fucking show them

We of the left spend a lot of time and energy attempting to point out that in the so-called War on Terror, Muslims are not our adversaries and Islam per se is not the problem.

The one place that some of us meet up with conservatives (who are our adversaries, and whose ideology is the problem) is the idea that some sort of democratic government would be ultimately beneficial for the people of the Muslim world. We just differ on the question of whether invading their countries on false pretenses and occupying them is a legitimate or effective means to that end.

In Iran this week they're spending a lot of time and energy making our lives harder. These people even make flag-burning look bad.

Iran to take revenge on Denmark with Holocaust cartoons
(Pravda) Iran has reacted to Denmark’s publishing of the cartoons in turn. The largest state newspaper Hamshahiri which holds conservative views has announced that it will hold a competition to find the most amusing cartoon based on the theme of the Holocaust.

I'm linking to Pravda out of the sheer ridiculousness of it all.

Let me be clear: This doesn't change a thing. Muslims are not the adversary and Islam is not the problem, any more than Pat Robertson's utter nonsense makes Christians our enemy. This week is just frustrating -- have you ever had a friend whom everyone keeps calling an asshole, and whom you keep defending...while they keep on being a bigger and bigger asshole?

The enemy of my enemy is my friend

Two words: Satanic Verses.

US sides with Muslims in cartoon dispute
(Reuters) Washington on Friday condemned caricatures in European newspapers of Islam's Prophet Mohammad, siding with Muslims who are outraged that the publications put press freedom over respect for religion.

I can't wait until we value respect for religion ahead of press freedom here, too. They will have to pry my Piss Christ out of my cold, dead, urine-soaked hands.

The State of the Union, 2006

I figured it was about time for my annual blog entry, and look what shows up in my inbox -- a nearly perfect screed from a friend of mine whose vitriol rivals that of the Rude Pundit. Because his corporate livelihood might well be endangered by expression of liberal views, I must choose for him a pseudonym. With a nod to our shared Indian heritage, I will call him the Rude Pandit.

And reproduce his rant in full, naturally without asking his permission, saving me the trouble of actually writing in my own blog.
I always used to wonder how these reprehensible frat boys got so much pussy in college. Now I get it. Bush said almost EVERYTHING right. He stole thunder from the Democrats left and right. But we KNOW as much as he says he thinks we're the most special woman he's ever met and how much he wants to be with us, once he fucks us he'll move on to the next woman unapologetically. I don't know how we handle this. He says all the right things. His follow through will be poor to non-existent. And so many won't even notice. This is democracy though. The dizzy chicks get to choose who they fuck. And they make decisions in the moment. Remove all the gender stuff and generalize to exonerate me from misogyny and you get my point. The democrats just come across as sour and critical. It's heartbreaking. Bush was very good on that speech. I hate to admit it. But he was.

I need a drink.

Instant Halloween costume

I had to find a "superhero" costume for a party tonight. Two minutes with Adobe Illustrator, a jacket and tie...

...and I'm a great American hero.

Now, if I can just find a jacket and tie.

Special election: Rapid responders needed

The Alliance For A Better California is looking for vocal volunteers who are willing to protest at Governor Schwarzenneger's events from now until election day. Because we usually do not hear about his events until the day they happen, we need to be able to mobilize people at a moment's notice. If you are available during the day & enjoy following the governor around, please give me your contact information and I will add you to our rapid response team.

Rapid response to the governor's events will play a cruical role before and during GOTV. We must counter any momentum he tries to gain back as the tide continues to turn our way.

Thanks for your help!

Merry Fitzmas!

I know that Santa Fitz didn't bring everything I might have wanted, but as I contemplate the true meaning of Fitzmas, I realize that it's not so important that I didn't get a pony. This neat red wagon will provide hours of amusement.

And Fitzmas, unlike some crappy holidays, might come more than once this year.

Separation of powers of rational thought

A nice catch from our occasional (not always voluntary) contributor Steve, who writes:

I relish the juxtaposition of these two observations, in an article that was just published on the New York Times web site:
WASHINGTON, Oct. 4 - President Bush sought today to allay the fears of social conservatives about his latest Supreme Court choice, saying that his selection, Harriet E. Miers, would adhere strictly to the letter of the Constitution...

"She's a woman of principle and deep conviction," Mr. Bush said of Ms. Miers, his White House counsel. "She shares my philosophy that judges should strictly interpret the laws and the Constitution of the United States and not legislate from the bench."...

Mr. Bush also sent a clear signal that he would resist, on grounds of executive privilege, providing senators documents related to Ms. Miers's work in the White House....

"I just can't tell you how important it is for us to guard executive privilege in order for there to be crisp decision-making in the White House," Mr. Bush said.

The Constitution does not specifically mention executive privilege, but the Supreme Court has recognized the need for confidentiality between high government officials and their advisers.

No contradiction here.

PCINO

The allegedly pro-choice Governor of California has just come out in favor of Proposition 73, a ballot measure that would make abortion illegal for minors unless their parents were notified in advance.

Prop 73, which was placed on the ballot by anti-abortion activists who have no intention of stopping with parental notification, is well outside the "moderate Republican" brand that Schwarzenegger once sported effortlessly and would now love to reclaim.

Is it possible that his putative moderation is leading to so much "RINO" ("Republican In Name Only") criticism from the right wing of the GOP that he's actually running right to shore up his base?

It would certainly be consistent with his announcement of his intention to veto a same-sex marriage bill...and with the company he keeps.
